    What non-ablative means

Fraxel is a non-ablative fractional laser. It doesn't remove or burn off the surface of your skin. Instead, it sends thousands of microscopic columns of laser energy through the upper layers, leaving the surrounding tissue intact. Your skin uses that intact tissue as scaffolding to heal rapidly, producing fresh collagen and elastin from the inside out. The result is significant resurfacing, but with days of downtime rather than the weeks required by older ablative lasers like CO2.

When to choose Fraxel over IPL or microneedling

Each of these treatments has a clinical sweet spot:

    • IPL, best for surface pigmentation, sun damage, redness, and vascular concerns. Minimal downtime.
    • Microneedling, best for mild-to-moderate scarring, texture, and early ageing. Affordable, mild downtime.
    • Fraxel, the gold standard when you need depth: deeper acne scarring, established lines, layered sun damage, or pronounced texture. It reaches further into the dermis than microneedling and resurfaces more aggressively than IPL.

    Results timeline

Immediate brightening is visible within two weeks once peeling settles. Real structural improvement, softened lines, refined scars, more even tone, develops over three to six months as new collagen matures. A second session is typically recommended six weeks after the first.

    Downtime, realistic expectations

Expect noticeable redness similar to strong sunburn for 24–48 hours, followed by fine, sandpaper-like peeling and bronzing for three to five days. Most clients are comfortable returning to work after day three with mineral makeup. Strict SPF 50 is essential for four weeks afterwards. This is not a lunchtime treatment, plan around it.

    Recommended course

For meaningful resurfacing, a course of three to four sessions spaced six weeks apart is recommended, which is why our package of four is priced as a course. A single session is suitable for skin maintenance or addressing a specific concern at lower intensity.

    Candidates & contraindications

    • Ideal candidate: Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV with sun damage, acne scarring, fine-to-moderate lines, or uneven texture, willing to invest in a course and accept three to five days of downtime per session.
    • Not suitable if: you have active acne or infection, are pregnant or breastfeeding, are on isotretinoin (recently or within six months), have very dark Fitzpatrick V–VI skin, a history of keloid scarring, or recent tanning.

We always consult before any Fraxel course. If it is not the right treatment for your skin, we will tell you.

    Frequently asked

What is the difference between Fraxel and IPL?

IPL uses broad-spectrum light to target pigment and vascular concerns near the surface of the skin, best for sun damage, age spots, redness, and rosacea, with minimal downtime. Fraxel is a fractional laser that delivers microscopic columns of energy deeper into the dermis to stimulate collagen, best when you need depth: established lines, deeper acne scarring, layered sun damage, and pronounced texture.

How many Fraxel sessions are needed?

For meaningful resurfacing, a course of three to four sessions spaced six weeks apart is recommended, which is why our package of four is priced as a course. A single session is suitable for maintenance or for addressing a specific concern at lower intensity.

What is the downtime after Fraxel laser?

Expect noticeable redness similar to strong sunburn for 24–48 hours, followed by fine, sandpaper-like peeling and bronzing for three to five days. Most clients are comfortable returning to work after day three with mineral makeup. Strict SPF 50 is essential for four weeks afterwards.

    Is Fraxel laser painful?

Topical numbing cream is applied for 30–45 minutes before treatment to keep things comfortable. During the laser pass, most clients describe a warm prickling sensation. Cooling air is used throughout. After treatment, skin feels warm and tight for a few hours, similar to a strong sunburn.

Who is not suitable for Fraxel laser?

Fraxel is not suitable if you have active acne or infection in the treatment area, are pregnant or breastfeeding, are on isotretinoin (Roaccutane) currently or within the last six months, have very dark Fitzpatrick V–VI skin, have a history of keloid scarring, or have recently tanned. We'll confirm your suitability at consultation.
