IPL Laser Treatment: Frequently Asked Questions

    2025

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is one of our most popular clinical treatments at Haku. Here are the answers to the questions we hear most often.

How Long Does IPL Treatment Take?

Treatments take 20–40 minutes, depending on the targeted area. Expect some redness and flaking as the skin renews itself over the following 1–3 weeks.

    What Are the Side Effects?

Possible side effects include stinging during application, temporary redness and darkening of pigmented lesions before they fade away. Rare risks are scarring and blistering.

    Does IPL Hurt?

There may be a snapping elastic band sensation during pulses. We provide numbing cream for added comfort.

What Are the Risks of IPL Face Treatment?

IPL risks include irritation, blistering and crusting in rare cases. Strict protocols minimise adverse reactions. One's complexion may initially darken before improved skin emerges.

How Long Do IPL Results Last?

Gradual natural ageing will occur, but IPL-stimulated collagen remodels skin for 1–3 years typically. Annual touch-up sessions help maintain your refreshed, youthful glow.

How Often Should I Get a Session?

We recommend getting a treatment once a month to maintain the benefits of the treatment.

    What Conditions Does IPL Treat?

IPL is most effective for sun damage and photoageing, age spots and pigmentation, persistent facial redness and rosacea, thread veins and broken capillaries, and uneven skin tone. It works by emitting targeted pulses of broad-spectrum light that are absorbed by pigment or blood vessels in the skin, the light energy converts to heat, which breaks down the targeted cells without damaging the surrounding tissue.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

For pigmentation and sun damage, most clients see strong results from a course of three sessions spaced four weeks apart. For rosacea or vascular concerns, four to six sessions are typically recommended. Results are cumulative, each session builds on the last. Maintenance sessions once or twice a year help sustain results as natural ageing continues.

What is the Nordlys IPL System?

At Haku Ranelagh, we use the Nordlys IPL system developed by Candela, one of the most established medical-aesthetic device manufacturers in the world. Nordlys uses Selective Waveband Technology with interchangeable handpieces, allowing precise wavelength control for each specific concern. This precision is what separates Nordlys from the lower-cost IPL devices used in many high-street salons, it treats more conditions, more accurately, with less risk of irritation.

Is IPL Suitable for All Skin Types?

IPL is best suited to Fitzpatrick skin types I–IV. It is not appropriate for recently tanned skin, darker Fitzpatrick skin types V–VI, those on photosensitive medications such as Roaccutane or doxycycline, or during pregnancy. We assess suitability at consultation before any course begins.

How Much Does IPL Cost at Haku?

A single IPL session at Haku Ranelagh is €220. A course of four sessions is €800. Every course begins with a consultation to assess your skin and confirm suitability.
