    Skincare Concern

    Dullness & lost radiance.

    What this actually is

Dullness is the vaguest thing people bring us and one of the most fixable, because it is nearly always about light rather than colour.

Healthy skin reflects light evenly from a smooth, hydrated surface. Three things break that up. Dead cells accumulating on the surface scatter light in every direction. Dehydration flattens the upper layers so there is nothing plump to bounce off. And uneven pigment or a sallow tone absorbs light instead of returning it. Add poor sleep, low iron, smoking or a rough month, and the effect compounds.

So the fix is usually not a brightening serum. It is exfoliation at a sensible cadence, water in the upper layers, and time. Gentle chemical exfoliation two or three times a week clears the scatter; a humectant serum on damp skin restores the plump; an antioxidant in the morning slows the daily oxidative dulling; and sunscreen stops you undoing it.

Be careful of the obvious trap. Dullness invites over-exfoliation, and over-exfoliation produces a compromised barrier that looks — and this is the cruel part — dull. If your skin is dull and slightly tight or stinging, exfoliate less, not more.

    A routine that suits it

Where we would start. Build it up one step at a time rather than all at once.

    1. Cleanse

Nothing stripping. The glow you are after does not come from a squeaky finish.

    2. Exfoliate

Two or three times a week, chemically rather than by scrubbing. More often is counterproductive.

    3. Treat

Water first. Most 'dull' skin is dehydrated skin that has stopped reflecting light evenly.

    4. Moisturise

Seal it while the skin is still damp — that is where the plumped surface comes from.

Daily SPF, so the antioxidant work is not spent repairing the same damage each afternoon.

    Frequently asked

Will exfoliating more often give me more glow?
No, and past a certain point it reverses. Two or three gentle chemical exfoliations a week is the sweet spot for most skin. Beyond that you start removing barrier faster than it rebuilds, and a compromised barrier looks dull and feels tight — which tempts people to exfoliate again. If your skin stings when you apply anything, that is the loop you are in.
    Is dullness just dehydration?
A large part of it usually is, which is good news because it is the quickest thing to change. Plump, well-hydrated upper layers reflect light evenly. Try a humectant serum onto damp skin and a moisturiser on top for two weeks before buying anything labelled brightening — a lot of people find that is the whole problem.
Could it be something other than skincare?
Frequently. Low iron, poor sleep, dehydration, smoking and a run of stress all show up in the face first, and no serum outperforms fixing them. If dullness arrived suddenly and stayed, and especially if you are also tired or breathless, it is worth a blood test rather than a new routine.
