    Skincare Concern

    Dryness & dehydration relief.

    What this actually is

These are two different problems that get the same name, and treating one as the other is why so many people are using a rich cream and still feel tight.

Dry skin is short of oil. It is a skin type, it tends to run in families, and it shows up as flaking, roughness and a papery look. Dehydrated skin is short of water. It is a condition, anyone can have it — including oily and breakout-prone skin — and it shows up as tightness after cleansing, makeup that will not sit, and fine lines that appear overnight and vanish after a good night's sleep.

The tell is simple: if your skin is both shiny and tight, it is dehydrated, not dry, and piling on oil will not fix it. Dehydration wants humectants — hyaluronic acid, glycerin, panthenol — applied to slightly damp skin and then sealed. Dryness wants lipids: ceramides, squalane, fatty acids.

Most Irish skin in winter is some of both, made worse by hot showers, indoor heating and hard water. Lukewarm water and a cream while the skin is still damp will get you further than an expensive serum applied to a bone-dry face.

    A routine that suits it

Where we would start. Build it up one step at a time rather than all at once.

    1. Cleanse

An oil or balm at night, lukewarm water, and stop before your skin squeaks.

    2. Tone

Not for stripping — this is your first layer of water, onto skin still damp from cleansing.

      What we use
    3. Treat

A humectant essence or serum to pull water into the upper layers before you seal it in.

    4. Moisturise

The lid on all of it. Richer at night, lighter by day, adjusted by season rather than by rule.

    5. Protect

A hydrating SPF in the morning so the last step is not the drying one.

    Frequently asked

How do I tell dryness from dehydration?
Dry skin lacks oil and usually always has — it flakes, feels rough, and looks papery. Dehydrated skin lacks water and can happen to anyone, including oily skin: it feels tight, looks dull, and makeup clings to patches. If your face is shiny by lunchtime but tight after washing, that is dehydration wearing dryness's coat, and a heavier cream alone will not solve it.
Why does my skin feel tight straight after cleansing?
Almost always the cleanser, the water temperature, or both. Tightness means you have removed lipids the skin needed. Swap to a cream, oil or balm cleanser, use lukewarm rather than hot water, and put your next product on while the skin is still slightly damp — that one change fixes it for most people without buying anything else.
    Can oily skin be dehydrated?
Very often, and it is one of the most common things we see. Skin short of water can produce more oil to compensate, which is why stripping foaming cleansers and strong toners tend to make oily skin oilier. Adding water back — a humectant serum and a light moisturiser — usually calms the oil down rather than making it worse.
