What this step does

A moisturiser's main job is to slow the rate at which water leaves the skin, which is why it goes on last of the leave-on steps and works best on skin that is still slightly damp. Texture should follow your skin and the weather rather than a rule: the same person often wants a fluid in July and a cream in January. Oily and breakout-prone skin still needs one — stripping water out tends to bring more oil back.
